Thank you, Frances. You've been a great help; very articulate. I was focused on the fact that five partners were being presented in clue 1; I overlooked the fact that four spouses were being presented, as well.

Frances wrote:

Hi sullivande,
I think the key to understanding this part of the logic is the fact that Jed and Barb are married. How do we know this? From Clue 1 we find all 5 couples: Neither Cyn, Jed, or their spouses danced together (4 couples) and none won the waltz. Using the diagram order of woman/partner/dance we get:

(1) Cyn SOMEBODY/---- ----/----
(2) ---- ----/Jed ANOTHERBODY/----
(3)---- ----/---- SOMEBODY/----
(4)---- ANOTHERBODY/---- ----/----
(5)---- ----/---- ----/Waltz

Now where can Barb winning the Charleston go? Not position 1 or 5. How about 2? No clue 7 says Charleston & Jed are 2 different. 3? No as clue 3 says Barb was with Deb's husband, not Cyn's and our chart tells us Cyn and postition 3 have same last name. That leaves position 4. Which means her last name is the same as Jed's.

According to Clue 6, if Jed DID dance with Ms. Karr, his surname (and Barb's) would be Larks. But according to Clue 7, Ms. Larks and Charleston were 2 different ones. So he didn't dance with Ms. Karr. Did I help or confuse you?

Frances.
edited by Frances on 4/11/2012

I couldn't figure this one out, so I went to the solution (Classic Variety Puzzles Plus Crosswords May 2012, page 116). I agree with the solution until: Jed's partner isn't Karr [Barb[Charleston] isn't Larks (7)] (6)
I get that Barb isn't Larks because Larks and the winner of the Charleston are two different contestants (clue 7), but I don't see how clue 6 tells us that Jed's partner isn't Karr because Barb isn't Larks. Clue 6 tells us that Ms. Karr and Mr. Larks are partners. Am I missing the link between Jed's partner and his spouse, or is this faulty logic?
