Puzzle No. 119 - "Movie Moms"

This was a fun crossword to fill out as I had most of the themed answers right off the bat without cross clue help. I am curious about 47 Down, though. It is clued as "saw" and the answer is "adage." Isn't this clue a bit of a stretch? An adage is a saying that has been accepted as truth. Saw does seem a bit of a stretch since it implies some sort of first hand observation and then confirmation of a hypothesis. Anyway, this issue has been a delight. I usually stick to Crosswords Crosswords but this magazine has a great selection of different level puzzles and the digest size has been easier to tote around.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the definitions of the word "saw" is adage or familiar saying.

Edited to add: Yes, this is from the freedictionary.com:

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/saying

"Saw often refers to a familiar saying that has become trite through frequent repetition: old saws that gave little comfort to the losing team." smile

Its interesting, I looked up adage but there is no listing for saw. I looked up saw and adage was the second entry. You learn something every day.
