I solved a Word Games puzzle last night that contained a fun category and I thought I would share it here. It’s not too hard once you realize where the clues are headed, but it did take me a few minutes to catch on. I’ve put the letter count out to the side of each clue. Each answer is two words. smile

Big Shoes to Fill

1. Concur with no difficulty (11)
2. Former show host (13)
3. Sword avoidance (11)
4. Jealousy over a Ph.D (10)

Nice! Was stumped until I got to #4, then I got the rest easily enough.

I have an idea of how it might go, but a few letters would have to be filled in before I'd know how to proceed. For me, this game wouldn't be the entry point for the puzzle. Part of the clue for #4 suggests something; the other part doesn't match that thing. Part of the clue for #1 also suggests something, but then what?

I can't say more without possibly spoiling the game for others.

Yes! That's the thing about the Word Games puzzles, you usually end up with a couple of letters already in place but I wasn't sure how to give those away when sharing this puzzle portion. The key is the "big shoes" and the letters used to indicate this large size!

I'll come back in just a while and post the answers! smile

Here are the answers:

1. Agreeeasily (agree easily)
2. Emceeemeritus (emcee emeritus)
3. Epeeevasion ( epee evasion)
4. Degreeenvy (degree envy)

The triple Es, of course, refer to the extra wide shoe size. LOL smile

Thanks. I definitely would have needed starter letters. For #4, at first I was thinking maybe something about Doc (= Ph.D.) Martens, and the others might also be plays on brand names. Then you posted that the letters for a large size were part of the trick, so I figured the answers might have extra Es or Ws. Got nowhere with that.

I had the same thoughts, even trying to think who the "former show host" might be, as one of the other categories in this puzzle used the names of celebrities. It wasn't until all of the Es started popping up that it clicked with me! smile
