Diagramless #1 Pg. 106 Clue 19 across (Spongy). Answer plays-out and confirmed in back as: "Infirm". Definition of infirm may in no way be applied to this clue.
"Unfirm" would be correct.

Dear ewc_rice,

Thank you for your interest in Penny Press. We rechecked the puzzle in question, Diagramless 1, in the September 2016 issue of Classic Variety Puzzles Plus Crosswords and did not find a mistake. The clue for 19 Across is “Spongy” with the answer INFIRM. The following is from the Random House Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary:

in·firm (in fûrmÆ), adj.
1. feeble or weak in body or health, esp. because of age; ailing.
2. unsteadfast, faltering, or irresolute, as persons or the mind; vacillating: infirm of purpose.
3. not firm, solid, or strong: an infirm support.
4. unsound or invalid, as an argument or a property title.

We realize that definition 1 is the more common use for INFIRM, but based on definition 3, we consider “Spongy” to be a valid clue for INFIRM.

Thank you,
